2001: A Space Odyssey Book Cover

Scratchboard with a tiny bit of digital cleanup and type. 6.278"x10.2"
As a first foray into scratchboard it was pretty fun. I like what it has to offer and if I wanted a similar look I would definitely consider using the medium again. For those familiar with some older stuff I have done, this evolved directly out of a 2001: A Space Odyssey inspired Threadless design. I took out the astronaut, although there is a drawing of him that I may scratchboard and digitally juxtapose in to see how I feel, but I felt the simplicity helped the design and didn't want to make it too busy.

I played with adding texture to Jupiter at the beginning but settled on the thin red/orange curve to imply that instead (again, staying with the "simple" theme) and I played around with fonts quite a bit settling on a modified LL Medien, Life Support, and Neuropol.

Some personal criticisms: I wish the light behind the monolith was more structured. I had tested out many approaches and I was still too timid when starting on the final board (not to mention it was of much higher quality than the little sheet I was testing on so things worked differently). I also don't know how I feel about the space between "a space odyssey" and curve of Jupiter.
